G4S, the world’s leading security company, has been awarded a multi-million Pound contract by EDF Energy to provide facilities management services at Hinkley Point C (HPC) in Somerset, South West England,  the first new nuclear power station built in Britain for a generation.

This follows the award to G4S in July 2015 of a ten-year contract to provide security services during the construction of Hinkley Point C. G4S provides access control, perimeter security and visitor search and screening, as well as vetting of on-site contractors.

G4S will now also provide facilities management services on this large-scale project, which will have  5,600 people on site daily at peak construction. G4S will provide a range of services at the main Hinkley Point C site and associated satellite locations over ten years. The UK Government signed contracts in September 2016 with a consortium led by EDF and including China General Nuclear (CGN), giving the construction of Hinkley Point C the go-ahead.

Facilities services will be provided across the site including at the power station itself and a warehouse being used as a holding depot for all the construction related equipment and materials. G4S will also operate several park and ride sites as well as multiple temporary and permanent offices and training facilities. Over the life of the contract additional services will be added, including the management of a large visitor centre which will welcome visitors both during construction and once Hinkley Point C is operational. Services will include mechanical, electrical and building fabrication services, general building maintenance, cleaning, waste management, pest control, helpdesk and postal services.

The contract commenced on 1 April 2017, with an 18 week transition period underway to embed all services.

G4S FM and Secure Solutions plan to take on offices in Bridgwater, to create a centre of excellence for training as well as provide a local recruitment hub. The centre will provide training space to conduct Enhanced Security Officer Courses (run by G4S Specialist Training), First Aid (FPOSi) training and Supervisor Training for the Security Contract, as well as cater to all the training requirements for the FM contract.

G4S FM Director of Critical Infrastructure, Ian Ridgley, said: “This announcement builds on the long-standing relationship we have with EDF Energy at Hinkley Point C, providing advanced and integrated security for what will be the biggest building project in the UK. We are pleased to have been chosen to provide additional vital facilities management services to support the efficient running of the site.”

Hinkley Point C is expected to be operational for 60 years, employing a workforce of almost 1,000 people to run the power station, which will include two European Pressurised Reactors (EPR). Once operational, it will provide reliable, low carbon electricity to meet 7% of the UK’s future electricity needs.

There are many fantastic career opportunities available to work with G4S at Hinkley Point C, offering the chance to be part of the UK’s first new nuclear power station for a generation. Anyone interested in joining the project workforce can register with the Hinkley Point C Jobs Service online
