The G4S-managed centre for men held under immigration laws, which recently under-went a full refurbishment, has been described by monitors from the independent monitoring board (IMB) as “well organised” with staff striving to consistently maintain a calm and co-operative atmosphere.
Originally opened in 1996, the centre was closed for refurbishment from October 2016 until May this year when it returned to its full operational capacity of 162 detainees. Over the course of 2016 the centre housed 1,595 male detainees of 116 different nationalities, with most detainees held at the centre for less than a month.
“Today’s report recognises the centre’s ethos of welfare and respect for all our detainees. It is at the heart of what we do at Tinsley House and I am encouraged to see these comments from our monitors.”
