Independent monitors at an immigration removal centre near Gatwick Airport have reported that the facility continues to be well-run in their annual report published today.

The independent monitoring board (IMB) at G4S-managed Brook House, a 508-capacity centre for adult men held under immigration laws, said that the centre treats detainees “humanly and fairly” and highlighted the respect for the diverse range of cultures.
At the time of the inspection, the centre had a capacity of 448 but over the past six weeks has expanded by 60 places, with the last 10 being opened yesterday.
Director of Brook House immigration removal centre, Ben Saunders, said:
“This report reflects the hard work by the team at Brook House to provide a safe, decent and compassionate environment for the men in our care and I am encouraged that the report recognises the resilience of staff in what has been a challenging year.
“Our welfare team, who provide information and support for detainees through what can be a distressing process, continue to be invaluable resource and in the coming year we aim to expand their remit and work with other agencies to provide advice for those struggling with legal and financial issues in the days before departure, making the process easier and more manageable for detainees.
“The next phase for Brook House is the expansion of the centre, which is almost complete. In the lead up to this expansion, we have recruited new colleagues and developed additional activities such as art and education programmes, which are particularly popular at the centre, to ensure we continue to deliver a high standard of care to the men we look after.”
