G4S has been reading gas meters for Total Gas & Power, the largest supplier of industrial and commercial supplier of gas by volume to businesses in the UK, since 2004.  This latest announcement sees the partnership extended for up to five more years with G4S expected to make 600,000 visits each year to Total Gas & Power’s UK customers.

The renewed contract started on 1 November 2012 and has a value of £6m.

G4S is now the largest supplier of outsourced meter reading services in the UK. 

Under government plans, old-style meters are being replaced by Smart meters.  Smart meters measure exact usage and send all the information back to energy suppliers – either directly, or via a data-processing company (such as G4S) – without the need for someone to visit the property.
