In an effort to strengthen connections between incarcerated fathers and their children, the Port Phillip Prison ‘Reading with Dads Program’ is making a real difference. This initiative allows prisoners to record themselves reading children’s storybooks, creating a unique and personal way for them to stay connected with their children. By participating, fathers can strengthen their relationships and be present in their young children’s lives through the program.

The program begins with an information session where prisoners select a storybook and design a custom bookmark. Participants then record an audio version of the story to be sent along with the physical book and the personalised bookmark to their child.

Feedback from prisoners and their families has been overwhelmingly positive. One participant shared that it was a great way to express love, “It’s very important for children to hear their parents’ voice - It allows their hearts and minds to relax. This program is imperative in its unique ability to provide some semblance of stability into impossible situations.

This highlights the program’s significant emotional impact and its role in maintaining and nurturing family relationships during a challenging period.

The program also serves as an educational tool, it provides prisoners with opportunities to engage in activities that promote positive family relationships while enhancing their own literacy skills. By practicing reading and recording, participants improve their verbal and reading abilities, which can be beneficial both in prison and upon reintegration into society.
