In 2016, the South Australian Government embarked on a bold initiative called 10by20 aimed to reduce the rate of reoffending 10% by 2020. Followed by a review of the State’s correctional system by an independent panel, alongside its partners the State has been driving a fundamental shift in corrections policy that continues to this day.

In 2016, 46% of all sentenced prisoners returned to South Australia’s correctional services within two years of release.

Through the tireless efforts and dedication of staff and partners across the South Australian corrections system, the 10by20 target to reduce reoffending 10% by 2020, was not only achieved, but exceeded.

South Australia now has the lowest rate of reoffending in the nation at 39.3%.

Building on this success, The South Australia Government and the Department of Correctional Services are committed to reducing the rate of reoffending even further. The new strategy aims to further reduce reoffending 20% by 2026.

The G4S team at Mount Gambier Prison continue to play a crucial role in reducing recidivism rates in South Australia. Since 2021, 33.81%. prisoners have returned to the prison within two years of their release. This is well below the target of 42.5% and on track towards achieving a 20% reduction in reoffending by 2026.

These outstanding results not only surpass the State's target but also showcases our partnership with the Department for Correctional Services (DCS) South Australia and SYC Limited. It is also a testament to the exceptional work of our staff, and their dedication to creating an environment that promotes rehabilitation, growth, and successful reintegration.

Allan Bridges, Mount Gambier Prison's Resettlement and Reintegration Manager, expressed his appreciation for the staff's efforts, saying, "I am immensely proud of the work our staff have put in to achieve such remarkable results, and I am so grateful to work alongside such a dedicated team. I believe their commitment to supporting the rehabilitation and successful reintegration of inmates has made a significant impact on reducing overall recidivism rates."

Allan added, "Our partnership with SYC has been instrumental in this success. Their expertise in delivering evidence-based programs and multifaceted services has provided our inmates with the necessary tools and support to turn their lives around. Together, we have created an environment that fosters personal growth, skill development, and a genuine opportunity for a fresh start."

We continue to have a significant impact on the lives of those within our care. But there is more to be done!
