Kira's Insight: Finding Fulfillment and Purpose as a Custody Officer
Firstly - before joining G4S as a Custody Officer, what was your background & work experience? Did you have any experience working in the Custodial Industry?
Before G4S I had no experience in Custody - my background actually was in fitness and customer service - I worked in Personal Training and Hospitality!
What sparked your interest in applying for a Custody Officer position at G4S?
I have always wanted to work in some sort of law enforcement/justice job but I was never really sure where. I had started to research the industry and happened to see the G4S Custody Officer position advertised online. While it wasn’t a role I had heard much about previously, I read the advertisement and it sounded really interesting, being in the line of work I was looking for in the justice sector. I’d also always wanted to work for a global company in order to progress my career, and to grow my skills.
Describe your experience going through the G4S training program. What aspects were most valuable in preparing you for the job?
I had no idea what to expect going into the initial training program but I was really excited because this was something out of my comfort zone. We learnt a lot in our first week of theory in the classroom and also the second week in the defensive tactics training, but the most valuable part was definitely when we started the shadowing - that's where you work with the current Officers, and really get “hands-on experience” and learn the most.
What does a standard week and day look like in the role?
My standard week in this role would range from starting and finishing at different times due to the rostered shift work. The week has a variety of different challenges; some are complex and some are straight forward. Each day is different and that’s what I like about the job.
In terms of what I do in a week - my job duties as a Custody Officer include ensuring the safety and security of persons in custody. This entails daily tasks of routine housekeeping duties, front of house customer service, administrative duties, and escorting persons in custody to Court hearings, professional visits, and ensuring their rights to safety and wellbeing are upkept.
What's your favourite thing about being a Custody Officer at G4S?
The people I work with definitely make the job worthwhile because some days can be stressful, however we work as a team and we help each other out - there is a huge sense of camaraderie among us.
Secondly would be the nature of the job - it’s a rewarding job being able to look after different types of people in custody and ensure that their wellbeing and safety are paramount.
What are the biggest challenges you face in this role, and how do you overcome them?
Working in this role can be physically and mentally challenging. However I find that looking after my physical health by going to the gym and being active on my days off helps keep me fit for the role. I also ensure that I maintain a good work/life balance by catching up with friends and family as much as possible.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Custody?
My advice to someone who wants to consider this career would be to give it a go! Starting without being in the industry before and initially not knowing what to expect,I ended up loving this job. It can be very challenging at times - however it’s also very rewarding. If you’re someone who likes working with people and wants to make a difference, it’s definitely a fantastic career to pursue.
